The Ghana Military Academy (GMA) has held an inter-platoon novices boxing competition for cadets of Short Service Commission and Special Duties (SSC/SD) intake 62 from 19-20 November 2025 at the Whistler Barracks in Teshie.
The two-day rigorous event featured 37 fiercely contested bouts in the lightweight, bantamweight and welterweight categories in accordance with the International Amateur Boxing Association regulations. The competition saw Chiringa platoon emerge as overall champions with 37 points, followed by Burma and Abyssinia platoons in the second and third place respectively.
The Guest of Honour, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Isaac Nicholas Paintsil commended the cadets for their resilience and composure throughout the competition.
He also applauded the Acting Commandant GMA, Brig Gen Cornelius Komla Lithur and staff of the Academy for sustaining what he described as a “proud tradition” that forms an essential part of officer training.
Brig Gen Paintsil cautioned the cadets that the competition was not designed to make them professional boxers, but to build confidence, calmness under pressure and the ability to confront adversity. These attributes, he emphasized as essential survival tools for every officer of the Ghana Armed Forces.
He eulogized the outstanding performance of female cadets, noting that their tenacity reflected the Armed Forces’ commitment to inclusiveness. “You have shown, indeed, that what men can do women can equally do with grace and determination,” he added.
Flight Cadet Boamah Afia Boateng from the Chiringa and Officer Cadet Musah Nahjat Awienaate from the Abyssinia platoon won the best female boxer and gallant loser awards respectfully. Naval Cadet Teng-Yang BalberAlbert from the Burma platoon was also adjudged as the best boxer. All the award winners received a certificate of merit and trophies.
