3 May 2019. The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia has cut sod for the construction of 6 Garrison Sports Centre at the Barwa Barracks in Tamale on Friday 3 May 2019.
He said the project was in line with government’s strategy to equip the military with modern infrastructures, including accommodation, health and training facilities. Dr Bawumia added that the government was determined to revive the country’s sports activities at all levels to reclaim past glory and attain relevance in the global sporting fraternity.
He noted that the Ghȼ15 million edifice which is being sponsored by the National Lottery Authority, when completed would go a long way to promote fitness and sporting activities among the personnel of Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). He further stated that it would also enhance security service delivery as well as strengthen civil-military relationship when opened to the general public.
The Minister for Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul, on his part said the Six Garrison Sports Centre when completed would benefit the GAF, other sister security services as well as the people of Tamale.
He added that it would contribute to national development, thereby, creating job opportunities for the many youth as part of government vision of job creation. He appealed to the contractor to ensure that the project was completed within the stipulated period of thirteen months.
The Minister also took the opportunity to visit the Barwa Barracks to assess the damages caused by a recent rainstorm which destroyed five accommodation blocks meant for personnel of the Airborne Force and promised to get it fixed within the shortest possible time.
Present at the ceremony were the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt Gen OB Akwa, the Service Chiefs and other Senior Officers.
