6 August 2018. This year’s Ghana Army Inter-Command Sports Festival, themed ‘Fostering Esprit de Corps and Teamwork Through Sports’ has officially commenced at the Nicholson Stadium in Burma Camp on Monday 6 August, 2018.
The Week-long competition will assemble contingents from the Support Services Brigade Group, the Southern, Central and Northern Commands respectively who are expected to compete in various sporting disciplines such as volleyball, handball, basketball, swimming, tennis, football, tug of war and athletics.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Guest of Honour, Brig Gen (Rtd) Joe Sylvester Nkrumah professed that, the motive of the competition was to promote friendship, cooperation, esprit de corps and physical fitness among personnel and also create an avenue for selecting a formidable team to represent the Army in the upcoming Ghana Armed Forces Inter Service Sports Competition.
Brig Gen (Rtd) Nkrumah urged all participants to exhibit a high sense of professionalism, true sportsmanship throughout the games as well as demonstrate immense physical capabilities to set new records.
He added that, the Ghana Army in recent past has been a safe haven for great pride and nostalgic exploits by providing numerous sports personalities and was hopeful the current generation would soar for colossal achievements into the future.
Brig Gen (Rtd) Nkrumah seized the opportunity to encourage female officers and soldiers scheduled for the exercise to compete in disciplines and exhibit their prowess to vindicate gender-equality believers. He also urged the officials to live by their oath of officiating in a fair and impartial manner.
In the official opening men’s football match, Southern Command beat Central Command by 2 goals to nil.
Present at the opening ceremony were the Chief of the Army Staff, Maj Gen William Azure Ayamdo, Formation Commanders, Chief Staff Officer, Officials and Participants.
