28 June 2018. The Headquarters (HQ) Southern Command has held a two-day Inter-Unit Drill Competition at the RECCE Square from Wednesday 27 to Thursday 28 June, 2018.
256 personnel which comprised 8 Officers and 248 men, from 1 Battalion of Infantry (1 BN), 2 Battalion of Infantry (2 BN), 5 Battalion of Infantry (5BN), 64 Infantry Regiment (64 INF), the Armoured Recce Regiment (RECCE), 66 Artillery Regiment (66), Southern Command Camp (C/SC) and 48 Engineers Regiment (48 Eng.) participated in the competition
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, Brigadier General Thomas Oppong-Peprah in explaining the purpose of the drill and competition noted that such was needful to shape the character and attitude of soldiers. He added that soldiers imbibed the spirit of comradeship and the determination to succeed.
He officially commenced the 2018 Drill Competition, which he called Battle for Supremacy with the assembly of battle-hungry Officers, Men and Women of the various units on the Square. He encouraged them to continue to live by the motto of the Command; KULLUM SHIRRI, Ever Ready!
The Guest of Honour and Review Officer, Air Commodore Isaac Rockson Wayo stated that the keenly contested inter-unit drill competition demonstrated tenacity and agility of contingents, standards the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) sought to inculcate in all troops. He noted it was imperative to keep drills in the military career to foster team work.
66 Artillery came first with 829 points while 48 Engineers placed second with 827 points and 2 Battalion of Infantry placed third with 823 points. They were awarded with the sum of GH¢5000.00, GH₵3000.00, GH¢2000 .00 with a Trophy and a Certificate of Merit, respectively.
Commanding Officers of the various Units, Officers, Command and Unit Sergeant Majors and Paramount Queen of Nkonya-Traditional Area, Nana Otubea II were present to grace the occasion.
