29 May 2018. The Defence Minister, Hon Dominic Nitiwul has performed a sod cutting ceremony for the construction of a monument in honour of the late Major Maxwell Mahama at the Airport Hills Roundabout in Accra on the Tuesday, 29 May, 2018.
In commemorating the demise of the late Major Mahama, the solemn ceremony was performed to pave the way for the construction of a monument in his honour. The Minister therefore hoped that the erection of the monument would add as an impetus to the crusade against mob justice and serve as a perpetual reminder to the present and future generations that mob justice irrespective of the instigating circumstances should not be condoned or tolerated in any civilized society.
He used the opportunity to thank the family of the Late Major Mahama for their restraint, patience and faith in the government and the people of Ghana through their one year of pain and grief. He urged the family and the general public to continue to exercise restraint and patience while the judicial process was on-going. He added “the wheels of justice grinds slowly but will catch up with the evil doers” and at the appropriate time the real justice will be dispensed and those found culpable duly punished in accordance with the laws of the land.
Apart from the sod-cutting ceremony to commemorate the first anniversary of the Late Major Mahama, a Trust Fund has been launched with the inauguration of the Board to manage the trust fund. The President and Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces has donated a sum of Fifty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵50,000.00) as seed money for the fund.
The Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa stated that whereas the ceremony was to fulfil the earnest desire of the family and the nation at large in assuaging the brutal murder of the Late Major Maxwell Mahama, it could not fill the void created by his untimely death.
The Chief of the Defence Staff thanked the government, the Defence Minister, family of the Late Major Maxwell Mahama and all relevant stakeholders for their roles culminating in the ceremony.
The Late Major Maxwell Mahama, met his untimely death at Denkyira – Obuasi in the Central Region through mob justice while on lawful national assignment on Monday, 29 May, 2017. This plunged the entire nation into shock, utter grief and disbelief.
