VEEP Commissions Ghana Infectious Disease Centre

The Vice President of Ghana, His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has on behalf of the Commander–in–Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo commissioned the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre at the Ga-East Municipal Hospital at Kwabenya in Accra on Friday 24 July, 2020.

In his address, the Vice President remarked that, the 100 bed facility was a celebration of the Ghanaian ingenuity and a dedication to humanity and hard work. He said the pandemic had uncovered some of the structural challenges in the health care delivery system of the country in terms of output and capabilities, hence, the construction of the Infectious Disease Centre. Adding that, it was therefore imperative for more to be done to strengthen the human capital training vision.

Dr Bawumia was proud that the facility was constructed by Ghanaians and noted that, henceforth, subsequent health projects would be awarded to the Ghanaian constructors. He stressed the project was a world class facility and therefore deserved a world class management.

The Minister for Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul in his remarks added that the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) Engineer Corps had played a laudable role as far as the project was concerned, by providing certified military architect and engineers who collaborated with the main contractor, Messrs Mendanha & Sousa to commence the construction of the building to meet the rising demand for isolation and treatment of COVID-19 patients.

The Minister was hopeful that the facility would continue to serve its purpose even after the pandemic had fizzled out. He acknowledged the contribution of GAF and members of the Ghana COVID-19 private sector fund for making the project a reality.

The project being the first of its kind was facilitated by the Ghana COVID-19 Sector Fund (GCPSF) in conjunction with the Ministry of Health (MoH) to support the fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Building comprised a highly sophisticated level 3 Biomedical Laboratory, a Triage unit, waiting areas, Nurses station, VIP and general Wards, a 21 Bed Intensive Care Unit with various categories, a pharmacy, a recovery court yard, a dispensary, access and exit ramps. It also has access corridors, ambulatory entrance and exit canopy, a medical gas house, an 8000KVA generator house among others.

Dignitaries present at the occasion were the service Chiefs and other Senior Officers.
