The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), has on Tuesday, 12 May 2020, commissioned newly built accommodation blocks for soldiers at Burma Camp in Accra.
The construction of the four (4) new blocks with sixty four (64) apartments commenced in 2017 was in fulfillment of the Barracks Regeneration Project. Each of these apartments has a living room, two (2) bedrooms, a kitchen and a standard sanitary facility.
Commissioning the accommodation, the President assured that, government would remain committed to dealing with matters of accommodation in the GAF. He revealed that commencement of the phase-two of the Burma Camp roads that had been submitted to the Ministry of Roads and Highways will soon be underway.
He used the opportunity to express his gratitude to CDS and the hardworking Men and Women of the Armed Forces for responding to his call to help fight COVID-19. He acknowledged the cooperation exhibited between GAF and other security agencies especially, Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in securing the borders. He advised all to observe the social distancing and enhance hygiene protocols that had been outlined for the people of Ghana.
The Minister for Defence, Honourable Dominic Nitiwul mentioned that as part of the Barracks Regeneration Project, other accommodation structures had been commenced within all Garrisons in the country.
He urged the Military High Command to ensure that the accommodation units were well maintained at all times and further appealed to the new occupants to adhere to the maintenance of the facility to ensure its longevity.
The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt Gen Obed Boamah Akwa expressed his appreciation to the President for having the welfare of the soldiers at heart, and realizing the vision of the barracks regeneration. He used the opportunity to assure C-in-C that the GAF would continue to execute its role with diligence and utmost professionalism at all times.
