The President of the Republic and the Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), His Excellency (HE) Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has cut a sod for the commencement of work on a monument in honor of the late former United Nation’s Secretary General, HE Kofi Annan on Wednesday 4 September 2019.
The short ceremony was held at the forecourt of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) at Teshie in Accra as part of the two days maiden Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum which was aimed at promoting Peace Operation in context of Violent Extremism in Africa.
In his remarks, the President acknowledged the good works of Mr Kofi Annan as a true statesman who lived his life according to the values he represented as a Ghanaian, African and the international bodies.
He entreated all Ghanaians to live commendable lives and try to preserve the image of mother Ghana.
In his welcome address, the Defence Minister, Hon Dominic Nitiwul noted that after the establishment of the Centre 21 years ago, it has contributed in ensuring Regional and International peace. He commended the late Kofi Annan for his constant advocate for peace, Women empowerment, Millennium Development Goals, Child protection and Abuse among others.
The wife of late former United Nation’s Secretary General, Mrs Nane Maria Annan, used the occasion to express her gratitude and appreciation on behalf of her entire family to Ghanaians for the love showed her.
The ceremony was graced by some former African Head of States. Among them were; former President of Burundi and AU High Representative to Mali and Sahel (MISAHEL), HE Pierre Buyoya, former President of Central African Republic (CAR), HE Catherine Samba-Panza, former President of the Federal Republic of Somali, HE Hassan Sheik Mahmoud. Former President of Sierra Leone, HE Dr Ernest Bai and former President of Liberia, Prof Amos Claudia Sawyer.
