PROFILE BRIG GEN SALIFU GILBERT YAKUBU

Brig Gen Salifu Gilbert Yakubu was born on 23 February 1960 in Accra. He attended Accra New Town Experimental School, Accra and Kalpohin Middle School in Tamale. Between 1973 and 1980, he attended Tamale Secondary School where he obtained his General Certificates of Education (Ordinary and Advance Levels). He continued to the University of Cape Coast in 1981 where he graduated with BA (Hons) and Diploma in Education in 1986. He joined the Ghana Military Academy and was commissioned in August 1988 as part of Regular Career Course Intake 28 after which he was posted to the 66 Artillery Regiment, Ho. Later in his career, Brig Gen SG Yakubu also obtained a Master of Arts Degree in International Affairs from the University of Ghana, Legon.

Brig Gen SG Yakubu has had the opportunity, during his career, to attend a number of local and foreign military courses. Some of the local courses he has attended include the Young Officer’s Course at the Army Combat Training School (ACTS), the Intelligence Officer’s Course, Accra and Military Law Basic Course at the Legal Directorate. Others include the Public and Non-Public Accounts Course at Forces Pay Regiment (FPR), Mechanical Transport Officer’s Course at Armed Forces Mechanical Transport School (AFMTS) and Junior Staff Course at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC). Some of the notable foreign courses he attended include the Young Officer’s Artillery Course in India, the Battery Commander’s Course in Kontagora, Nigeria and the Senior Staff Course at Jaji, Kaduna, Nigeria.

In the course of his career, he has held various command and staff appointments. He was Troop Leader, Intelligence Officer, Adjutant and Battery Commander at the 66 Artillery Regiment, Ho. From 1999 and 2006, he was Instructor/Directing Staff at ACTS and between 2006 and 2011, he was Deputy Director Administration and later Acting Director Administration at the Army Headquarters. In 2011, he was appointed Deputy Commander ACTS and then in 2013 he occupied the appointments of Commander ACTS and Deputy Commander Army Training Command (ATRAC). He later became the Commander ATRAC in acting capacity in 2014. In February 2015, he was again appointed Director Administration at the Army Headquarters. He is currently the Commander of the Ghana Military Academy (GMA), an appointment he has held since May 2017.

He has served on various peacekeeping missions in several countries. He served with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as Troop Leader of Ghana Battalions (GHANBATTs) 33 and 37 and as Staff Officer in UNIFIL HQ Operations Room in 1996. Between March and September 2003, he served with the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) as the Deputy Commanding Officer. He also served with the United Nations Operation in Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI) as the Commanding Officer from June to December 2006 and as Force Provost Martial from October 2007 to November 2008. He was Troop Leader and Battery Commander of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) GHANBATTs 3 and 8 respectively. In addition to these, he also served with the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) as an Observer and with the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) as the Chief Plans Officer.

Brig Gen SG Yakubu is married to Patricia Quarshie-Yakubu. He loves to play Lawn Tennis and listening to music.
