Lieutenant Colonel Richard Kainyi Mensah was born on 12 February 1970 in Accra. He attended St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School and Kumasi Academy where he obtained the General Certificates of Education Ordinary and Advanced Levels in 1986 and 1988 respectively. He then proceeded to the University of Science and Technology Kumasi where he was awarded Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science (French and Economics) in 1994. He gained admission into the Ghana Military Academy in 1995 to pursue the Basic Military Training and successfully commissioned on 22 August 1997.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Kainyi Mensah has attended several military courses and these include; Young Officers Course at the Army Combat Training School, MATS – Teshie in 2001; Parachute Jumping Instructors Course at the No 1 Parachute Training School, Brize Norton in the United Kingdom in 2004; Military Observers Course at the Ecole de Maintien de la Paix, Koulikoro in Mali in 2006; Junior Command and Staff College at the Land Force Atlantic Area Training Centre, Detachment Aldershot, Nova Scotia in Canada in 2007; Combat Team Commanders Course at the Army Combat Training School, MATS – Teshie in 2009; Senior Command and Staff College, Ghana Armed Forces Command And Staff College (GAFCSC), Teshie from 2009 – 2010 and later Ecole de Guerre at Ecole Militaire, Paris France where he obtained the Brevet d’etudes Militaires Superieures and Expert de la defense en Management, Commandement et Strategie from 2013 – 2014. He also holds a Master of Arts (Governance and Leadership) from the Ghana Institute of Public Administration (GIMPA), Accra in 2010.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Kainyi Mensah has also held several appointments. These include; Platoon Commander, Intelligence Officer, Adjutant and Acting Officer Commanding Training Wing all with his mother unit the Airborne Force, Tamale. He also served as Aide-de-Camp to the Army Commander from September 2002 – May 2005. He has also served as an instructor at the Ghana Military Academy from August 2005 – August 2010. From August 2010 to February 2013, he also served with the 64 Infantry Regiment in the capacities as the Second in Command and Commander Rear of the Regiment. Until his current appointment as the Chief Training Officer of the Ghana Military Academy, he served as the first Chief Training Officer of the Army Training Command, Teshie Accra.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Kainyi Mensah has also served in the following peacekeeping missions; UNFIL GH 48 and 56 as Platoon Commander and Assistant Operations officer in Lebanon in 1998 and 2002 respectively; Platoon Commander ECOMOG GH 16 Sierra Leone from June – December 1999; Platoon Commander UNAMSIL GH 1 in Sierra Leone from December 1999 – August 2000; Military Observer UNMIL in Liberia from September 2007 – November 2008 and Chief U1 at the Force Headquarters MINUSCA in the Central African Republic from December 2014 to April 2016.

He is married with children. His hobbies include watching movies, playing and watching soccer and volleyball.
